Rail brought opportunity and prosperity to Karoonda and was a lifeline for transport and trade in its early years.
Karoonda briefly shot to international fame in 1930 when a meteorite fell to earth just to the east of the town on the night of 25 November.
The weather phenomenon that ripped through the town on the evening of June 10, 2005, was definitely out of the ordinary.
In 1940 the Karoonda Area School was established – the first of its kind in South Australia – with 112 students on the roll.
Football and netball have always been – and continue to be – a significant part of Mallee community life.
